Beat Jugglers Deelight
Wearing a superman t-shirt while standing behind a set of turntables makes a bold statement to the audience. Even more bold, would be to think that a turntable artist could rescue the art from the portable yet inhuman convenience of the DAT (Digital Audio Tape)
Well Steve Dee, is that bold and he battled the kryptonite of tired DATs and cassettes at shows in the 1980s from his isolated bedroom at his Mom's house. From his tireless efforts he would eventually tour the globe including performing at a US Presidential Inaugaration.
Dee evolved his technique to break new ground in turntable artistry and live recorded sound manipulation. He was fullfilling the visions of Vertov and accelerating the work of Grand Master Flash and Grand Wizard Theodore. Steve Dee is not 'Grand Master' Steve Dee, he doesn't need any title or superlative, he merely is the shirt he wears, Superman.
Dee wasn't looping the breaks like Kool Herc or Grand Master Flash, he was picking out the indiviudal drums and sounds to build his own breaks! He was taking smaller snippets of sound than any turntable artist before to compose new breaks on the fly.
'Beat juggling' was the name that stuck to Dee's creation (not to be confused with the term juggling used in Jamaica to describe mixing). The name beat juggling goes some way to describe the intense concentration necessary as the live turntable artist plays one drum sound on one turntable and quickly switches to another drum sound on the other turntable.
