Sound Montage

In 1928, Paul Hindemith and Ernst Toch established a research program at the Hochschule fur Musik in Berlin, exploring the use of recorded sound as a compositional tool. Hindemith was a professor of composition who wrote satirical operas and pushed the boundaries of social convention in his work. Toch was a highly skilled pianist who was mostly self-taught as a musician and a composer.

In 1929 and 1930, Toch (who entitled his solo work Fugue aus der Geographie) and Hindemith produced Grammophonmusik, short montages of sound based on phonographic speed changes, sound transposition, mixing. They were the pioneers in a process which was more easily undertaken by later composers working with the tape medium.
